We all enjoyed and experienced the excitement of India’s recent win against England in one of the most entertaining cricket matches from the comfort of our homes. Some of us even braved the pandemic, went to the stadium, and caught the live action. Indians have always been very passionate about cricket, but have we ever spared a thought. It’s because there are thousands of security personnel deployed at some of the most difficult terrains on our national borders. While we were enjoying this standoff between India and England on the cricket field, our forces on the borders were engaged in a different standoff, protecting our sovereignty. They remain alert and attentive 24×7, braving extreme weather conditions – only to make sure that the citizens of India remain safe.

  • Faster fiberisation is what India needs to embrace innovation and connect the masses - Feb 25, 2021

With over a billion mobile phone connections and a tele-density of around 86%, India is ranked among the largest telecom markets in the world. However, with 504 million active internet users, India’s internet penetration stands at only 40% compared to 88% in countries like the US. Moreover, it is mostly concentrated in urban areas and has not penetrated rural India as deeply as needed. Around 70% of the rural population still does not have access to the Internet. For holistic socio-economic growth, India needs to extend equal opportunities to the rural areas to have access to digital assets.

  • Why 2021 is the year of more marketing than ever before - Feb 13, 2021

“Getting a whopper is always the best, but ordering a Big Mac is also not such a bad thing.” This is the conclusion of a social media post from the United Kingdom arm of Burger King asking its customers to order from McDonalds, its stern rival. The social media post not only won millions of hearts, but also indicated how the marketing landscape has transformed in the last few months. Instead of engaging with “banterism” with their competitions, the brands were more frequently seen extending a helping hand to the competition or collaborating with them to remain relatively unscathed during the pandemic.

  • Pluralizing progress: bridging the digital divide - Feb 13, 2021

The new normal has set an imperative for mainstreaming digital service delivery, both for businesses and commoners. India, already a formidable name in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) frontier, found another gear in digital adoption during the pandemic. However, the shift to digital did not impact those on the wrong side of the digital divide. For instance, internet penetration is limited to only half of India’s population, 84% of educators are under-equipped to teach digitally and 80% of parents have faced challenges in provisioning digital educational tools for their children.

  • Definitive Corporate Action: A Key to Driving Climate Resilience - Feb 08, 2021

The global sentiment on climate change turned a corner with the Paris Agreement of 2015. This international covenant marked the awakening of collective consciousness oninadequate socio-economic practices, leading to erratic weather and irreversible shifts in ecosystem. However, the recent UN Emission Gap Report and UN Climate Change Annual Report, reminded us that persisting challenges to acting on climate change is a page that will not turn unless the issue of irresponsible consumption is addressed. So the key question is how to best generate traction on a cause that can define the future of this planet? The solution lies in the UN Sustainability Agenda that recommends a multi-sectoral partnership for change. Alongside governments corporates bestowed with enormous resource mobilization potential and community influence can spearhead the giant stride necessary for driving substantial and affirmative climate action.

  • This is overall a positive and progressive budget that aims to boost the economy - Feb 02, 2021

We welcome the government’s strategy of infrastructure-led recovery through higher allocation and reforms in power, roads and ports. However, the time was apt to bring parity on spending between digital and physical infrastructure, especially at a time when we look to aggressively move towards becoming a $5 trillion economy. The budgetary allocation of INR 6,000 crore towards BharatNet is a step in the right direction, and an outlay towards building and modernising digital infrastructure would have set the foundation for achieving accelerated growth and bridging the digital divide. The government demonstrated a stronger focus on innovation through an allocation of INR 50,000 crore for the National Research foundation. A budgetary allocation for digital infrastructure can complement this focus, paving the way for disruptive technology innovations

  • Top CSR Projects in Pune - Jan 30, 2021

JJWEP or JeewanJyoti Women Empowerment Programme was set up in 2014 at Ambavane, Taluka Velhe. Although just 50 km from Pune, this region was largely underdeveloped and had a patriarchal society. Women thus had no freedom to voice their concerns, and the literacy rate among them was extremely low. The programme aimed at addressing these issues by not just empowering rural women with equal learning opportunities and professional training courses in areas such as nursing, tailoring, beauty culture and computers among others; but also ensuring their holistic development by making them self-sufficient, feel respected in their families and have a part in the decision making process.

Gitanjali is not just another 15-year-old kid. Named the first ever “Kid of the Year” by the Time magazine, she leveraged technology to combat issues such as contaminated drinking water, opioid addiction and cyberbullying. Interestingly, the same publication in its another issue declared 2020 as “The worst year ever” and marked “2020” with a big red “X” on its cover. The big red “X” has only been used five times before - all of them to mark the most infamous incidents or people in our planet’s history.

  • Sterlite Technologies Limited: Shaping Socio-Economic Transition Into the Art of Possible - Jan 21, 2021

India, a land of contrast, presents a socio-cultural dichotomy that often nurtures divergent shades. It is also an account of the inherent challenges and discriminations that have been stymying the optimum progress of almost half of the population. While the Indian Constitution duly recognises the rights of women to self-actualisation, even after seven decades of its adoption, the on-ground situation is a lot different.

  • The 'tech' year that it was: 2020 - Jan 19, 2021

Mobile broadband technologies accounted for 67% of mobile subscriptions in 2020, with average traffic per smartphone user increasing from 13.5GB per month in 2019 to 15.7GB per month in 2020. The world witnessed a steep rise in the time spent on video streaming applications with a whopping ~59% of the global population as active internet users. When the year 2020 kicked off, nobody was aware how a pandemic will define each and every sphere of day to day working and especially how ‘digital transformation’ will be influenced by it. The pandemic acted as a catalyst for rapid change. The need to be ‘always connected’ changed the speed of technology disruption by ~2X-- 3X. Along with binging for hours on YouTube, Amazon Prime, Hotstar and Netflix, we also felt the need for faster and more engaging data networks and digital services.

Global data traffic is likely to reach 10ZB annually by 2025 according to International Data Corporation. (One ZB equals 1 trillion GB). Similar trend is seen in India. Average data consumption by India consumers is likely to double to 25 GB per month per user by 2025, according to the Mobility Report by Ericsson.

  • Sustainable Manufacturing for Sustainable Livelihoods - Jan 12, 2021

Climate emergency was named the Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year in 2019. This emphatically brings out the importance of sustainability in all aspects of living – be it manufacturing, business operations, infrastructure development, or our day to day lives. The innumerable socio-ecological issues faced by our planet and ever-diminishing resource repositories highlight the urgency for change. And while it is every single individual’s responsibility to work towards protecting the environment, corporates do make a substantial contribution to environmental degradation. Globally, 100 firms are responsible for over 70% of carbon emissions, while other issues such as landfilling and water over usage only add to the list. Conventional manufacturing practices thus need to be re-designed so that they resonate unambiguously with the primary interests of communities, economy, and environment.
