Cable Operators Go “WTF” (What’s the way Forward?) over Digitization Trends

The recent mandatory digitization of Cable TV industry by government of India, has led to changing the dynamics of Cable TV industry, with too little time and too much to do. Having monopolized entertainment offerings for decades, the operators are now in a race against time to protect their subscriber base from being eroded by DTH operators, IPTV and OTT players. The reasons are far too many: subscribers are demanding a wider choice of channels with better viewing quality; broadcasters and their advertisers want accurate, real-time TRP reporting of subscriber viewing habits; government regulations to name a few. Further adding to the gap in demand and supply, there is a plethora of entertainment options which cable operators right now can’t provide like Video-on-demand, Pay-per-View and high speed Internet access. The writing is on the wall; cable operators can no longer afford to plug, play and forget! In order to maintain a firm foothold in TV viewing homes and to stay relevant to the younger generation, they must aspire to become MSOs (Multi-service operators) and provide end-to-end entertainment options for their consumers, and create new revenue streams for their broadcasting partners. Cable TV providers will need to upgrade their OSS BSS to offer new interactive service and better customer experiences that will enable them become an MSO.
