Analytics and IP Log Management System: A mandate to succeed

     Like any other tool, internet can also be misused, abused to gain unfair advantage. According to Cisco Visual Networking Index: Forecast and Methodology, 2015–2020 – By the end of 2016, global IP traffic will reach 1.1 ZB (Zettabyte) per year, or 88.7 EB (Exabyte) per month, and by 2020 global IP traffic will reach 2.3 ZB per year, or 194 EB per month. The rise in data traffic is as a result of increase in Smart phone penetration, adoption of high speed Internet (3G, 4G), data hungry apps, video-on-demand, need for HD audio & video, and growth of social media platforms. Unfortunately, internet is being exploited by criminals, and cybercrimes are witnessing a rise. Governments have intervened with corrective measures to help curb the menace. The importance of lawful interception has become a mandatory norm:
  • Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has a mandate for operators to store Data for 7 years
  • The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) under section 38 of the Cybercrimes Act states that a service provider is required to keep all traffic data and subscriber information for a period of two years
  • The Australian government requires telecommunication providers and ISPs to mandatory retain data for two years
  • The European Union requires communications providers to retain necessary data as specified in the Data Retention Directive for a period of 6 months to 2 years
With regulatory guidelines in place, having a robust IPLMS system has become an integral part of the operator’s ecosystem. However the huge data that is stored is used only as and when requested by the investigative agencies. Operators should now look at IPLMS not as a mandatory norm to detect suspicious activity, but use the huge data stored for meaningful customer insights. The entire subscriber browsing history, which is stored if analyzed properly can be put to good use. Operators can combine such data for multiple subscribers gain insight and preferences. This information can help devise customized plans and offers. The kind of trends and patterns derived are:
  • Location wise usage to devise Location based relevant offers
  • Top websites surfed during a particular time frame
  • Match customer demographics stored with operator to relate to browsing patterns
  • Analyze type of device and their operating systems – Laptop, Tablet, Android, iPhone, Windows, etc.
  • Analyze subscriber experience with operator’s network over 2g, 3g, 4g, Wi-Fi etc.
  • Analyze subscriber usage with user’s mobile web browsing history, app usage etc.
  • Information on Data usage (peak time – off peak time)
  • Optimize network performance with analyzed data (i.e. If traffic is more on the 3g network, upgrade – network infrastructure)
  • Graphical based Dashboard for simplified operations
  • Websites with the highest rate of daily hits
  • IP Pool Utilization and Network Bandwidth Utilization Reports
Informed decisions based on Analytics results into higher monetizing opportunities for the operator by checking subscribers churn and an enhanced customer experience. Happy customers make happier business sense.
