Behaviour Based Safety (BBS) as an application of behavioural science has been widely accepted worldwide as an important tool of building a safety culture in industry, helping in achieving zero accident. The programme was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by Mr. Sushil Agarwal – chief operating officer from STL-Sterlite Technologies limited–NSBand the dignitaries of the BESAFE forum. On 25th October at The Taj Mahal Hotel, New Delhi, Amit Deshpande, Company Secretary & Corporate General Counsel at STL, was inducted into the Top 100 General Counsel Powerlist - India 2018 by Legal 500. This was no easy feat as the evaluation involved a comprehensive research process which ran over months and included various intricate elements.

Amit, a senior legal professional with over 15 years of experience in areas such as Corporate Law, M&A, corporate restructuring, legal due diligence and more, has played crucial roles, spearheading acquisitions, demergers, dispute settlements, and onboardings of new investors. At STL, Amit is instrumental in driving secretarial, corporate legal, ethics and compliance initiatives, among various others.

The industry has recognized the significance of Amit's contributions over the years, and has inducting him into the prestigious league of Top 100 legal professionals in India.

STL won the “Best-In-Class Cross-Functional Teamwork Project” award, at the 12th edition of the Express Logistics and Supply Chain Conclave, held on October 4, 2018, in Mumbai.

For a particular raw material, the entire cabling industry was dependent on foreign imports owing to the absence of Indian suppliers, low availability and high TCO. The objective of the project was to re-engineer the recipe and process for this key raw material, utilising only Indian resources, ensuring zero investment, timely delivery, and high quality of performance.

STL's supply chain team led the initiative with the specific PDCA approach. A cross-functional team consisting of internal departments like Quality, Design, Production, Process; external team 3 suppliers, and Subject Matter Experts. The teams utilized the Stage-gate model, brainstorming approaches, Ishikawa diagrams, root cause analysis, and multi-stage trials during the project. The biggest challenge was keeping performance consistency despite parameters changes, as all the steps in the overall process were interlinked. However, with persistence, the team could eventually achieve their goal with complete precision.

The successful outcome of these efforts has now led to the high quality manufacturing of the raw material within national boundaries with abundant supply, and an end to the monopoly of foreign suppliers. Reduction of time and elimination of custom-duty are further added advantages.

At the recently held My India WiFi India Summit 2018 in New Delhi, STL and BSNL were declared joint winners of the “Best Wi-Fi Monetisation Solution” award.

BSNL has deployed STL’s next-generation Wi-Fi Monetisation and Service Management Platform (SMP) in its network as a core solution which handles traffic from multiple access points. This integrated platform supports guest subscribers from public Wi-Fi hotspots, mobile data offload for BSNL’s existing packet core subscribers, and provides the mobile wireless broadband alternative for BSNL’s existing wireline subscribers.

STL's unique SMP allows BSNL to leverage carrier Wi-Fi as an integral part of their heterogeneous network services to improve spectral efficiency, offer bundled plans; earn profitability, and deliver a high-quality user experience.

Making a difference to lives of citizens, this cloud-ready SMP also enables operators to tap new revenue opportunities with innovative offerings for different business verticals such as public venues, enterprises, residences, hospitality, municipalities, stadiums, universities, malls etc.

STL’s Optical Fiber units in Waluj & Shendra were recognised at the Frost & Sullivan and TERI Sustainability 4.0 Awards 2018, held on 1st June in Mumbai.

The 'Sustainability 4.0 Awards' have been designed to honour the efforts made by companies which actively integrate sustainability principles into their business culture. Such organizations along with creating economic value, also contribute to the establishment of healthy ecosystems and stronger communities.

STL's facility in Waluj was awarded the Certificate of Merit in the 'Believers' category while the facility in Shendra received recognition in the 'Challengers' category. The selection process involved two days of on-site assessment by a team of three independent assessors. Purpose, Planet, Partnership, and People were the key attributes on which the overall evaluation was based. Performance scores of both the facilities have been on the rise since last year, with the Shendra facility moving a major step ahead from being in the 'Believers' category to making its way to the 'Challengers' category, in the sustainability space.

In alignment with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, STL's CSR initiatives have contributed significantly to the four pillars of community, people, environment and conduct. In the e-education space, STL School Tech launched the Virtual Classrooms project, a technology investment to change India’s education landscape with a vision to provide quality education and equal growth opportunities to students from lower income families. Since its inception in 2013, this program has reached more than 1,72,000 children in 480 Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai schools. In terms of healthcare, through its Mobile Medical Unit programme launched in partnership with the Indian Red Cross Society in 2006, STL has made a striking difference to Dadra & Nagar Haveli’s tribal population. Free health check-ups to 24 villages, site visits by doctors, and a mobile dispensary serving more than 2 lakh patients, have ensured good health and overall well-being of the villagers in the region.

In conjunction with Government of India’s Skill India Mission, STL Foundation set up the Jeewan Jyoti Women Empowerment Institute in 2014 at Ambavane, with a conscious focus on technical education through vocational trainings like nursing, computer operations, data entry, tailoring, fashion designing. The institute has improved the socio-economic status of women from 93 villages in the Pune region till date.Identifying Aurangabad’s drought condition as a socio-economic challenge, the company constructed 22 check dams in 16 villages since 2006. Named Project Jaldoot, this initiative resulted in an increase of 6,44,000 cubic metre of groundwater in 8 villages, benefitting 14,000 villagers during 2016 - 2017. With over 6,000 villagers accessing clean drinking water, 150% increase in the water-storage capacity, and 20% increase in the average incomes, Project Jaldoot has brought transformational changes in the everyday living experiences of the people in the region. Proactively launching Project Green Belt, STL also planted 5,000 trees on both sides of the 2-km road to MIDC, Waluj, mitigating the effects of industrialisation in Aurangabad.

The Jury Commendation Award was won by STL at the 16th FICCI CSR Awards, for large-scale impact in water management in the drought-hit Aurangabad region. It’s Project Jaldoot has resulted in a 150 per cent increase in Aurangabad’s water-storage capacity. Through this initiative, 22 check dams were constructed in 16 villages, along with strategic focus on dam structures and water management, for long-term impact.

Between 2016 - 2017, Project Jaldoot brought about an increase of 644,000 cubic metre of groundwater in eight villages, directly benefiting 14,000 villagers. The project has resulted in over 6,000 villagers accessing clean drinking water and 20 per cent increase in the average incomes in these villages, leading to transformational changes in the everyday living experiences of the people, while ensuring security of livelihoods and significant economic growth.

The Bombay Chamber of Commerce Civic Award was won by STL under the Social Development Category on 24th October, 2017 for the company’s high-impact CSR work in Mumbai, Aurangabad, Silvassa and Pune.

The award publicly acknowledges and honors conspicuous achievements by corporate organizations to improve environmental, social and cultural metrics by way of service to the community, in addition to outstanding operational performance. It also recognizes businesses that have shown innovation, creativity and sustained commitment to corporate responsibility.

STL has always aimed at keeping its environmental impact as neutral as possible with zero water discharge at its manufacturing units and employing technologies to optimize energy consumption. Its water conversation efforts taken up through Project Jaldoot in Aurangabad focus on not only building and maintaining rainwater harvesting infrastructures, but also creating water conservation awareness and providing sustainable agriculture trainings, groundwater recharge and related support. This has increased water supply to the community, thereby bettering income opportunities for farmers by up to 30 per cent. STL has also replenished 644,000 cubic meters of groundwater thought Project Jaldoot, approximately 2.5 times I consumes as its facilities.

STL won CSR project of the year award for education programme

The Jeewan Jyoti Women Empowerment Institute which has till 2017 impacted over 28,000 lives and provided vocational training to over 700 rural women won the CSR Project of the Year Award under the Women's Empowerment Category at the Indian International CSR Excellence Awards held in New Delhi on 11th May, 2017. The awards were organized by Karunya University and the PHD Chamber of Commerce which is a proactive and dynamic multi-State apex organization. The Chamber acts as a catalyst in the promotion of industry, trade, entrepreneurship and contributes significantly to socio-economic development and capacity building in several fields.

STL was awarded a Certificate of Merit at the first ever UN-GCNI Best Practices Awards (in Sustainable Development Goals) for the work done in Water Management through Project Jaldoot and at its Waluj Plant through the Zero Water Discharge project. The award was given out at the hands of Global CEO of UNGC, Ms. Lise Kingo, and Dr. Bhaskar Chatterjee, the creator of CSR law on 28th April, 2017.

Known for its design, build and manage capabilities for smarter networks, STL recently won Amity Global Business School CSR Award for Best CSR Practices in the IT sector. This award recognises STL’s contribution towards establishing excellence through their high-impact CSR initiatives in environmental sustainability, water conservation, rural & community development, women empowerment, e-education, among others. The award was won by STL second year in a row and stands testimony to its commitment of transforming everyday living experiences by creating shared value.

STL was awarded the Lokmat Corporate Excellence Award for Best CSR Practices. Mr. Ankit Agarwal, Director - Telecom Products accepted the award on behalf of the organisation from Mr. Devendra Fadnavis, Honorable Chief Minister, Maharashtra in Mumbai.

STL received this award for its unique Wi-Fi and Enterprise Network Backhaul Solution using neutral fibre-to-the-x (FTTx) infrastructure. The award was presented by Dr Jitendra Singh – Minister of State, Department of Atomic Energy & Space, Prime Minister’s Office and Sardar RP Singh, National Secretary, BJP at the recently held Aegis Graham Bell Award ceremony, in New Delhi.

With increasing focus on gender diversity in the corporate world, AVTAR & Working Mother have jointly instituted the ranking for “100 Best Companies to work for Women in India” for the first time. In the inaugural edition of this ranking, STL has been featured in the “100 Best Companies to work for in India”.

More than 350 organisations took part in this project and top 100 companies were picked on the basis of their workplace profile, flexible work hours, women recruitment & retention, benefits, paid time off, company culture and safety & security. Participating organisations were required to provide data of high-order granularity on their initiatives in each of these areas and a robust data-protected analytics tool was used to evaluate and establish impact points.

In its effort to improve everyday living experiences, externally as well as internally, STL has been at the forefront of some remarkable initiatives for women employees. One of the most prominent among these is the all-women night shift at its Aurangabad-based optical fibre manufacturing facilities at Shendra and Waluj. STL has received an overwhelming response for these shifts as it is one of the first companies to implement it in 2016. The company also focused on increasing gender diversity with nearly 15-20% women candidates joining its workforce from India as well as global universities.

STL also undertakes women empowerment initiatives at the rural level through Jeewan Jyoti. This institute provides equal learning and skill development to women in-and-around Pune for financial independence. The Award was presented by Working Mother, a celebrated gender parity champion in the United States and AVTAR, India’s first diversity advocate & workplace inclusion expert.

At the acclaimed Telecom Leadership Forum, STL won the Telecom Leadership Forum Award for its contribution towards transforming? the Broadband infrastructure space. The award was given by Mr. Rahul Khullar, former Chairman TRAI, who is responsible for the transformational leap that the telecom industry has taken in recent years.

STL’s OF Waluj facility won the ‘Gold Award - Process Sector, Large Business’ and it’s OF Shendra facility won ‘Gold Certificate of Merit’. With this, the Waluj Unit has become India’s first to win the recognition in the Process Sector for OF.

Additionally, STL’s Lean Six Project on “Reduction of scrap due to bubble defect” was also recognised as Second Runner-Up in ‘Process Innovation’ category under F&S Project Evaluation & Recognition program (PERP) 2016. This project was appreciated for the methodology used and systematic approach towards problem-solving.

Impact of innovations

These innovations are capable of transforming bandwidth deficient telecom networks in India into future-proof telecom infrastructure capable of providing upto 1 Gbps speed to end users. Customers (telecom operators) have been technologically empowered to multiply their data carrying capacity and speeds on existing infrastructure without deploying additional optical fibres in their telecom network.

The Optical Fibre manufacturing plant at Waluj, Aurangabad, recently won the prestigious Frost & Sullivan India Manufacturing Excellence Award (IMEA) 2015 Gold Certificate. The award honours Indian manufacturing capabilities and assesses its global competitiveness while acting as the premier platform to identify Future Ready Factories in India.

The Waluj plant is India’s only fully integrated optical fibre producer and one of the largest suppliers of optical fibres to China, Europe and South East Asia. The assessment team identified the current standing of the facility on the software driven model and the resultant charts capture extent and balance of growth, the alignment of strategic & implementation achievements, and actual comparative metrics within the industry sector.

India’s largest award in field of TIME (Telecom, Internet, Media and Edutainment) and SMAC (Social, Media, Analytics, Cloud) was held on 27th November at NDMC Convention center in New Delhi. This award was initiated by Aegis School of Business, Data Science and Telecom & Convergence India, supported by COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India) and Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCOE) India. The Event was graced by the presence of Hon'ble Minister Dr. Jitender Singh, Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office; Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions; Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region as Chief Guest while, Sardar R.P.Singh, National Secretary – BJP was the Guest of Honour.
